Douglas County Open Space

Douglas County Division of Open Space and Natural Resources seeks to enhance the quality of life for residents by protecting wildlife habitat, natural resources, historic sites, scenic views and Douglas County's rural heritage while providing a wide range of compatible outdoor recreation and educational opportunities. The Douglas County Open Space Program was created in 1994.

The "Big D" in Perry Park is a part of the Douglas County Open Space program. Big "D" is a tract of land with a conservation easement on it, donated by the Perry Park Metropolitan District. The grassland meadow of Big "D" is in the Perry Park Subdivision. Perry Park Metro District manages the land. The land is open to passive recreation. Motorized use is prohibited. The "Big D" was protected in 1995 and consists of 80 acres of space.

Spruce Mountain Trail is 4 miles south of larkspur. Spruce Mountain is a large, tree-covered mesa that is visible from Interstate I-25, Spruce Mountain Road, County Line Road, and Highway 105. The property contains scrub oak, ponderosa pine forest, wet meadows, and rocky cliffs. It is part of an important wildlife corridor, allowing travel between the Pike National Forest and Greenland Open Space and Greenland Ranch. Douglas County is in the process of developing recreational trails on the property. Public access is by arranged hikes or rides through Douglas County.

  Spruce Meadows and Spruce Mountain Trails

Greenland Open Space Trail is Part of the Colorado Front Range Trail, the lower trail joins into the Old Territorial Road, connecting the old Greenland Townsite to Palmer Lake. The trail is within over 3,000 acres of Greenland Open Space. Trail passes through native grasslands, by ponds, through rolling Gambel oak hills and skirts ponderosa pine forests. Views of Greenland open space, buttes and Pikes Peak. The trail is aproximately 10 miles including the loop and 5 miles from Greenland to Palmer Lake.
